The house is in a fantastic location as you’ll see from this google maps street view image.
In terms of accessibility from London, it couldn’t be better: the international airport of Trieste Ronchi is just 20 minutes away (we’ll pick you up!) – and Ryan Air flights from Stansted are cheap and daily.
Just 20 minutes walk to the sea, 10 mins walk into the coastal town of Sistiana, a 20 minute bus-ride into Trieste, where James Joyce lived and wrote part of Ulysses, Ceroglie is a tiny village on the border with Slovenia. In fact, the name of the house is Slovenian (most of the inhabitants of the villages on this part of the Carso speak Slovene as their first language).
Even though it feels remote and rural (just what you need to focus on your writing), the village of Ceroglie (and neighbouring Malchina) are extraordinary in that they have some of the best-known agriturismi and osmizze in the area (local restaurants selling home-grown food)
as well as offering abundant spaces and places for socialising, meditating, wandering, running…even a little bit of shopping!
From here, it’s just over an hour by car or bus to Venice in one direction and Lubijana in the other – or a couple of hours to the mountains of Austria, or the spectacular beaches beyond Venice. In fact, Croatia is only an hour away too! …
Nearby Trieste really is Mittel Europa.
